John Baird

John Baird, French Polisher, 18 and 20, East Howard Street.—

Amongst the many important industrial establishments which contribute so materially to the commercial prosperity of the city of Glasgow, the old established and well-known firm of Mr. John Baird, French polisher, has for very many years occupied a leading position. The business dates back in its foundation to the year 1838, when it was established in Stockwell Street by Mr. Walter Hutchison, the firm being afterwards known as Hutchison & Baird, and subsequently Mr. John Baird became the sole proprietor. Concurrently with the development of the trade and commerce of the city of Glasgow, the business assumed proportions which rendered it necessary that increased accommodation should be obtained, and in 1878 the present extensive and commodious premises were entered upon.

These comprise large and well lighted workshops, replete with all the most improved appliances of the trade. French polishing in all its branches is extensively carried on, especially connected with ships and joinery work. Some idea of the magnitude of the operations of the firm, may be gathered from the fact that from eighty to one hundred workpeople are constantly employed, many of whom have been with the firm from ten to fifteen years. The business is conducted with great energy and enterprise, the firm having a very extensive and old-established connection with the leading shipping companies, &c., in Glasgow and the north of England, and are at present doing the whole of the hardwood fittings for the new municipal buildings in Glasgow. Mr. Baird has always a large staff ready to despatch to any place for the execution of work requiring to be done in a short space of time.

The proprietor is a gentleman occupying a high position in commercial circles, and possesses the advantage of long and thorough practical experience, and exercises in the management of his extensive establishment that sound judgment and well-directed energy which have always been so eminently characteristic of his business transactions. These works are acknowledged to be among the oldest established and largest of their kind in the kingdom.
