PROFESSOR FREDERICK ORPEN BOWER was born at Ripon, 4th November, 1855, and received his education at Repton and at Trinity College, Cambridge, of which University he holds the degree of Doctor of Science. His publications include "A Course of Practical Instruction in Botany," of which a third edition was published in 1891, "Practical Botany for Beginners," issued in 1894, and "The Origin of a Land Flora," 1908; also many special and separate memoirs. In 1885 he received his present appointment of Regius Professor of Botany in Glasgow University.
